Presented for the first time on physical media are 3 pieces retrieved from the Bass Communion archives and remastered by SW. Culled from a session recorded in a Nottinghamshire church in 1999, S.W. spent several hours making recordings of Theo Travis (Soft Machine/Robert Fripp/SW Solo band) improvising, captured by using a binaural head system.

 

These feature Theo’s improvised saxophone, flute and bamboo flute (he was moving around the church as he was playing, so sometimes you can also hear his footsteps). To these 3 recordings, totaling 32 minutes, I later added keyboard drones and percussion and mixed them in my studio.

 

Originally meant for a Uri Weller Spoken word CD project, but ending on the cutting room floor, those experiments didn’t lend themselves to Bass Communion’s darker and more atonal style, so the music they made that day was otherwise put aside and largely forgotten.

 

In the intervening 25 years “new-age” music has undergone some sort of renaissance and reappraisal, so now we can enjoy them for the meditational soundscapes they are.Wilson’s association with spatial audio has since then become one of the defining aspects of his career, so it's interesting to hear these recordings, a time capsule, if you want, has it must have been his very first experience with it.

 

This also marks the fourth collaboration between Coup Sur Coup and Bass Communion, and we are pleased to offer this exclusive release.

 

Limited at 200 copies, tape will be housed in a clear “winter ice” shell and a clear case, along with a hand numbered Purple/Pink Obi-Strip and double sided print J-card including never seen pictures from that session & with a written text from S.W.
