Legendary Pittsburgh Math-rock band Creta Bourzia dropped a surprise Extended play in late 2017. In 2018 it will be released as a limited run of coloured cassette tapes via Coup sur Coup Records.
The band include founding members guitarist Jeff Ellsworth, guitarist and singer Jason Jouver, drummer Dennis Kern with bassist Gene Doyle (who, along with Jouver, is a member of the Pittsburgh math-rock pioneers Don Caballero) and also featuring members of another great Pittsburgh band, Broughton's Rules.
The five-song “Commuter,” the first new music from the band since 2012’s “New Songs by the Young,” is the jarring listening you would expect from these heavyweights with a couple hard, crushing, dizzying instrumentals.
“One thing about the music that I thought was fun,” Jouver says, “is we kind of approached writing these songs like a rock band scoring different scenes from an imaginary crappy movie.
